Belleville Dentist Discuss How to get rid of canker sores

A canker sore is a narrow sore shaped like a hollow. It is usually found on tongues, on the inside part of the lip or on the inside cheeks. Canker sores usually have a white colour at the center. It makes eating and talking painful. Everybody is most likely to have canker sores in multiple times in their lifetime.

You do not need to worry as these are not contagious. In this article you will be able to know more about canker sores and how to get rid of them.

What causes a canker sore?

Canker sores usually develop when you bit your lip or when you hurt your mouth. It usually happens, too, when you have braces on your teeth. If you have certain food allergies, canker sores may develop after eating the food you are allergic at. Eating too much food or drinking juices with too much acid can cause canker sores, as well. Furthermore, a lack of vitamins or minerals like iron, vitamin B12, and folic acid is one reason of why people get canker sores.

What are the symptoms of having a canker sore?

The main symptom is having either a large or small but shallow crate on your mouth (tongue, inside of the lip, or cheek). Usually it comes with a burning or tingling sensation. It may cause swelling and pain for the person who has it.

How long will a canker sore hurt?

Canker sores may cause you pain for about a week or more. Major canker sores may take up to six weeks or more to completely heal. Yet, canker sores heal without leaving a scar.

What should I do first if I get a canker sore?

Getting a canker sore does not necessarily require doctor’s attention, especially if the cause is wearing braces. These get better after some time. If you want to relieve the pain you may try doing the following:

·         Eat soft foods that are easy to swallow. Sometimes chewing hard foods can make the canker sore worse.

·         Avoid strong flavoured foods and drinks like coffee, chocolate, spices, salty food, sour foods, and even nuts as they may hurt your canker sore.

·         When you drink fluids, be sure to use a straw. When the liquid touches the canker sore it can cause a stinging discomfort.

·         Brush your teeth carefully and do not let the toothbrush bristles touch your canker sore.

·         Rinse your mouth with salt water. Dissolve 1 teaspoon of salt in 1 cup of warm water.

If your canker sores do not heal after a week or two after doing the above-mentioned steps, then it is time to see a doctor. The doctor can recommend medicines that can heal your canker sores.
